Breathing masks that turn breath into siren sounds. Each mask carries a small ESP32 board with a mini fan that reads the air of every breath. The readings travel over wifi to a server, where all breaths are gathered and played as sirenas by oscillators. Breathing-Sirenas wants to share the breathing of all sirenas in the world.
2026: the conductor
For Collective Resonance (Q-O2, Brussels, 2026) the masks got a conductor: a browser instrument that places every breathing mask as a voice on a circle. Each sirena can be tuned in pitch, volume, delay and echoes, and orbits, wanders or stands still in the space, on headphones, stereo speakers or a speaker ring. When people breathe together, the sirenas slide into a scale and a shared chord opens. When they drift apart, they glide freely again, and the masks light up when the group breathes as one.
Join with a mask
- Connect the mask to a portable battery via micro-USB.
- Put the breathing mask on your face.
- Make a wifi hotspot on your phone named Accessphone, with Accessphone as password.
- The mask connects to the server by itself. Your breath now sounds as a sirena in the conductor.
